Under the Constitution, 50 percent of the 100 member Upper House is to retire before 10th March 2006 after completing three years of the membership.
Sources said that Chief Election Commissioner, Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar will conduct the balloting and announce names of the retired Senators and of those who would complete the six year term.
The 100 member Senate has 22 members each from the four federating units, 8 from Fata and 4 from the Federal Capital Territory.
They further stated that election on the seats of retired senators - 11 from each province, Fata 4, and FCT 2 - would be held in 2nd half of February 2006, and the newly elected senators would take oath of their office on 11th March 2006.
Provincial assemblies are the electoral college for the provincial seats. MNAs of Fata for Fata seats and National Assembly for Federal Capital seats.
Talking to Business Recorder Leader of the House, Wasim Sajjad told that election for the vacant office of Deputy Chairman of the Senate would be held in March 2006 after filling seats of the retiring senators.
Political analysts say that the ruling coalition, which has 55 members, may increase its majority in the Upper House after the forthcoming senate elections since changing of loyalties and horse-trading is part of our political culture.
