Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli said on Wednesday, the government is committed to improve the lot of women through socio-economic empowerment and increased participation in the political arena.

"The present government is following a multi-sectoral approach to bring women - half of country's population - at par with their male colleagues in all spheres of life."

She stated this in an interview with a Turkish TV Channel "Kanal 7" here.

The television channel is making a documentary on the role of women in politics and other affairs in Muslim World and has recorded interviews of several women representative from various Muslim countries.

Anisa Zeb said, Pakistan is committed and taking effective measures for women-empowerment and participation in socio-economic and political fields in line with the declaration adopted at the 1995 4th World Conference on Women held in Beijing.

She in this respect referred to the government's devolution of power programme initiated under the leadership of President General Pervez Musharraf and the unprecedented participation of women in all tiers of politics from local bodies to provincial and national assemblies.

Anisa Zeb also referred to the unprecedented 33 percent women participation in local government and informed that 27,000 women were elected as councillors in the previous local government elections.

She said, it was a major step forward to eliminate gender discrimination and provide equal opportunities of socio-economic development to women.

"Now we have remarkable participation of women in every sphere of life in Pakistan right from politics, business, important jobs and positions etc."

The Minister of State cited the recent appointment of Dr Shamshad Akhtar as Governor State Bank, adding this is for the first time that a woman has been elevated to such a top level and important position.

Similarly, she said, now the women are included in federal and provincial cabinets as ministers, ministers of state and advisors with important portfolios assigned to them.

The Minister of State also gave an historical perspective of the women role and representation in politics from early 1970s to 1999 and maintained that the current level of women representation in political arena was very much higher as compared to past.

She said Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah was a role model, who by participating in the Presidential elections in 1960s gave a clear message to country's women to come forward for active participation in politics.
