The Second India and Asia Regions Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference concluded here on Sunday with focus on carving out regional institutional mechanism to tackle the catastrophic natural disasters like earthquake and tsunami.

The valedictory session of the CPA Conference was addressed by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee and Pakistan Senate Chairman Muhammadmian Soomro.

In his concluding remarks, the Senate chairman underscored the need of evolving natural disaster management mechanism and development of the children, who are precious future assets of nations.

Lok Sahha speaker lauded the active role, valuable contribution and co-operation extended by Senate chairman in making colloquium a success. Soomro was source of strength for the conference, he added.

The speaker underscored the need to put in place the institutional mechanism in place to handle the situation in case of natural calamities, including earthquake and tsunami.

Billing the theme of the CPA Conference, including Tackling of Natural Disaster and Development of Children as germane and timely, the Senate chairman said comprehensive strategy and resources were direly needed to rope in the objectives of the conference.

"We must accord proper attention to upbringing of children and inculcate moral values and ethics in them", he said adding they would thus discharge their national obligations in future effectively.

The Senate chairman underlined the need of better environment for the upbringing of the children, parents should have regular interaction with the children as it was not merely responsibility of the academic institutions and community, he observed.

"We leave behind us our children. They should be well equipped with good values, enlightened moderation and tolerance, thus making them ideal citizens", he said adding, maintaining and psychological aspect of the children should also be taken care of.

Senate chairman appreciated the Lok Sabha speaker and his team for making excellent arrangements for the conference notwithstanding on short notice.

Soomro, who was unanimously elected as chairman of the Executive Committee of the Asian Region for three years, earlier highlighted the significance of interaction and exchange of views among the parliamentarians of the regions, which were facing similar challenges.

He told the participants that next Joint India and Asia Regions Conference would be held in Pakistan during 2006.

Later, jointly briefing media persons about the deliberations and recommendations of the Conference, Lok Sahha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee and Chairman Senate, Mohammadmian Soomro said 140 delegates from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives attended the event.

There was unanimity of views among the participants on the ways discussions held on means to be adopted and strategies to be worked out for dealing with the issues of natural calamities and development of children, they added.
