A delegation of European Commission visited Karachi Fish Harbour to inspect the sanitary conditions and steps being taken for improvement and upgradation of Karachi Fish Harbour.

The head of the delegation, Bathasar Benz, inspected the K-1 auction hall. He was apprised of the systems being adopted for landing, handling, transportation, and auction of fish catch etc. He was also informed that modification of fishing boats ('Hela boats') was underway as per specifications of Marine Fisheries Department (MFD), duly authorised in this regard by European Union.

Dr Baz Muhammad Junejo, Secretary, Fisheries, informed the delegation that Karachi Fish Harbour Authority (KFHA), with the assistance of all major stakeholders, including seafood processors and Fishermen's Co-operative Society (FCS), was making all-out efforts to maintain hygienic conditions at Karachi Fish Harbour.

The head of the delegation of European Commission lauded the efforts in maintaining the hygienic conditions at the Fish Harbour as per international standards and said that 'impressive progress' had been made.

During inspection, beside Dr Baz Muhammad Junejo, KFHA Managing Director Dr Muhammad Nawaz Baloch, Commodore SQ Raza, Director-General, Marine Fisheries Department, Shujaat Ali Qarni, Member, Managing Committee of FCS, and other officials were also present.

Later, Bathasar Benz also visited the seafood processing plant. Approximately 54 percent of Pakistan's total seafood is exported to European Union countries.
