For the first time ever in Pakistan, a four-month-old child has been operated upon for a very complicated open-heart surgery kind of which has never been reported in Pakistan.

Infant Muhammad Mustafa, son of Asadullah, was suffering from TGA (Transposition of Great Arteries). It is a congenital (by birth) heart defect where great arteries arise inappropriately from heart, putting child's life at risk and the only way for survival is open-heart surgery. After seven hours of continuous operation, the procedure (Senning's Procedure) completed successfully and the child is now out of danger.

According to press release of Ittefaq Hospital Trust Lahore, this operation incurred a cost of rupees 250,000 only, which was far less as compared to what it cost in India or other foreign country. According to the hospital sources this kind of surgery costs about rupees 1.5 million to two million in India while it is about rupees 3.5 million or more in USA or UK.

Asadullah - father of the child, a resident of Hyderabad Sindh is a poor person and cannot afford so much amounts. He came to know about facilities available at the Ittefaq Hospital Trust and brought his son here. He is very happy over the success of this operation. Doctors at Cardiac Centre, Ittefaq Hospital Trust said further delay in operation could have been fatal for this child.

The newly established Cardiac Centre at Ittefaq Hospital Trust houses state of art facilities for Open Heart Surgeries. Here complex cardiac surgeries are being performed on very small and sick babies, with very good results.
