Tax authorities have directed the Tax Policy and Reforms Wing to examine the possibility of setting up vigilance unit in the Central Board of Revenue (CBR).

In this connection, Member Tax Policy and Reforms Khwaja Tanveer Ahmed and DG, Intelligence and Investigation, Customs and Excise would shortly convene a meeting.

The main purpose of establishing vigilance unit for all taxes is to have a centralised place for monitoring and controlling tax fraud cases with the help of tax officials and concerned agencies. The purpose of creating this unit is to keep an eye on the CBR employees and handle complaints of corruption lodged against the tax officials.

Sources told Business Recorder here on Thursday that the CBR had constituted a three-member committee for finalising the terms of reference and scope of the organisation. The committee headed by former CBR Member Central Excise Naseer Ahmed comprises DG, Intelligence and Investigation and Member Direct Taxes as its members. However, it is yet not clear about the recommendations of this committee constituted several months ago.
