While briefing the Industries and Production Minister Jahangir Khan Tareen about the performance of the Engineering Sector and EDB during the last few years, he said that exports of engineering goods stood at $713 million in 2004-05 as against $394 million in the previous year. "During 2000-01, these exports were $232 million, $257 million in 2001-02 and $332 million in 2002-03," he added.
He said that optical, photography, cinematography and surgical equipment headed the list of top 10 items with $184.87 million followed by furniture and fittings, $175.46 million; articles of iron and steel, $83.38 million; electrical machinery equipment, $82.15 million; and boilers and machinery $60.39 million.
Imtiaz said that other export items included tools, implements, cutlery, parts, $41.55 million; vehicles other than railway rolling stock, $28.84 million; aluminium and its by-products, $14.99 million; iron and steel, $11.18 million; and copper and its by-products, $8.38 million.
He said that the US heads the list of top 10 importing countries from Pakistan with $147.92 million followed by Afghanistan with $93.05 million. United Kingdom is on the third position with $61.20 million followed by Dubai with $40.08 million.
