Federal Minister for Information Technology Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari on Thursday said the government was considering to set up computer labs at all 11,000 secondary and higher secondary schools of the country.

He made this announcement while chairing the second ministerial review of the project titled "IT/computer science teachers, lab in-charges and computer labs project - matching programme with the provinces." Under this project 1,098 computer labs are being set up at a cost of Rs 1841.130 million across the country including Azad Kashmir, Fata and Fana.

Awais Leghari said the government was committed to exploring all the resources to promote quality IT education besides providing job opportunities for young IT graduates.

He was told that 90 per cent of work on the project had been completed and all computer labs would become functional within the next six months.

The minister ordered to prepare ground for the next phase of the project under which computer lab facility would be extended to all 11,000 high and higher secondary schools of the country.

The meeting also ordered provision of the Internet service to computers labs completed so far.

The Ecnec had approved the project on January 7, 2004 with the centre providing 50 per cent of the cost. The provincial and AJK governments are contributing the remaining cost.

Under the project, 1,098 IT teachers, lab in-charges and computer labs are being provided to 1,098 government high schools, higher secondary schools and inter colleges in all provinces, AJK, Fata, Fana and ICT for imparting quality IT education at the levels of class IX to XII.

The project will cover about 11 per cent of the total number of schools/inter colleges in the public sector.
