Australian all-rounder Shane Watson will miss the international cricket season after undergoing surgery on a shoulder injury sustained in the first Test against the West Indies, Cricket Australia said on Wednesday.

Doctors said Watson, 24, damaged ligaments and cartilage when he partially dislocated his left shoulder in a fielding mishap on Sunday.

He will miss the remaining two Tests against the West Indies and is unlikely to play any part in the Test series against South Africa over the new year.

"It is fair to say he is unlikely to be back before the end of the international summer," Cricket Australia medical officer Trefor James said in a statement.

James said recovery times for the injury varied but revealed Watson would spend four weeks with his arm in a sling before even starting rehabilitation. Australia, still smarting from Ashes defeat, hopes to groom Watson as an genuine all-rounder to rival England's Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff.
