Exxon Mobil, the world's largest publicly traded oil company, jumped 1 percent to $58 as US oil futures rebounded from a $1 drop in the morning on oil inventory data. Exxon lifted both the Dow and the Standard & Poor's 500.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 42 points, or 0.40 percent, at 10,581.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 6.02 points, or 0.49 percent, at 1,224.61 The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index was up 6.34 points, or 0.29 percent, at 2,178.41.
