A two-day conference on "Education as the basis for Freedom and Democracy" concluded here on Wednesday with a call for making curricula broader, encompassing, liberal values of peace, tolerance and pluralism.

Friedrich Naumann Stiftung (FNS), in collaboration with the Society for Protection of Rights of Child (SPARC) and the Liberal Forum Pakistan (LFP), organised the conference to discuss the issues relating to uniform education system.

Prominent educationists presented their papers and exchanged their views on different aspects that how the curricula could be changed to bring it at par with the developed countries and meet the requirements of present time.

Director International Academy for Leadership, Germany, Jorge Dehnert and USAID Education officer Savera Hayat also delivered lectures on 'education and globalisation'.

They also adopted a resolution demanding radical changes in the curricula to ensure liberal values of peace, tolerance and pluralism in the teachings. They were of the view that the students must be given a broad and global view to face the challenges of the present era.

The draft also affirmed that citizens have the right to exercise their choice in term of choosing educational options for themselves and that choice must always be available to them.

"Pakistan has a poor literacy rate and needed to focus its all attention on achieving the objective of "education for all", the participants added.

Unesco Country Director, Jorge Sequeira said that every one has the right to education, adding that the concept of 'education for all' was first used in Unesco's constitution.

Jorge said, education should be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education should be compulsory.

He said that the State should be responsible for eradication of illiteracy and provision of free and compulsory education up to secondary level, within minimum possible time.

Jorge suggested that a uniform approach should be adopted across the education sector.
