The government has asked the European Union (EU) to send its mission in April or May 2006 instead of January to re-evaluate the facilities at Karachi Fish Harbour (KFH) for EU-bound seafood exports.

EU had indicated to send its mission to Pakistan in January to inspect whether the guarantees extended by Pakistan to improve the seafood handling facilities were implemented fully.

Sources told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that a meeting of stakeholders in fisheries sector was held a couple of days back, which took this decision.

"This proposal has been forwarded to EU through a letter. However, the final decision about the time of visit lies with the EU", sources added.

Attributing the move to the involvement of all government functionaries in earthquake relief activities, sources said that very little time was left in the start of new year, the government functionaries would not be able to do the task of rehabilitation of earthquake victims and allied works till that time.
