According to the report, the AJK suffered a total damage of about Rs 12.4 billion (livestock, Rs 8.7 billion; crops, Rs 3.4 billion and irrigation structures, Rs 240 million) and NWFP suffered a loss of Rs 7.1 billion (livestock, Rs 6.3 billion; crops, Rs 747 million and irrigation structure, Rs 84 million)
The short-term needs (one-six months) include immediate planting of wheat crop, construction of makeshift animal sheds, feed fodder and vaccine for livestock and medium-term requirements (7-18 months) include restoration of irrigation infrastructure and long-term (up to 5 years) mainly include restoring livestock inventory, rehabilitation of field terraces and soil conservation.
The report also said that about 300,000 cattle and buffalo and 573,000 sheep and goats in AJK and 553,000 large animals and over 390,000 small ruminants are under threat if livestock sheds, fed, fodder and vaccine are not arranged immediately in the affected areas.
Minfal officials told Business Recorder that the federal government would hold a meeting with the governments of NWFP, AJK, donor agencies (DFID, WFP, EU, USAID, CIDA, JICA, SDC, IFAD, US Embassy, FAO, WB, ADB and UNDP) for early recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction for agriculture and livestock.
They said that wheat would be sown on 15,000 acres in the affected areas of AJK and on 30,000 acres in the earthquake-hit area of NWFP.
For this grand operation, 2,200 tonnes of wheat seed, about 4,000 tonnes of DAP and 4,000 tonnes of urea is being supplied immediately by Minfal in these areas so that wheat sowing could be completed latest by November 30.
They said that Minfal has also decided to immediately release 30,000 tonnes of wheat to the World Food Programme for providing food assistance to the quake victims on deferred payment basis as WFP did not have cash to purchase this wheat.
Meanwhile, sources told Business Recorder that the WFP has made arrangements for food supplies for 200,000 in inaccessible areas and provide general food rations for 600,000 accessible by road, including those in the camps till November 30. "Supplementary feeding for 20,000 children under 5 years of age, micro-nutrient supplementation for 240,000 pregnant women and 600,000 children have also been arranged for a month," they added.
