France will boost its exports of wheat to Algeria this season in order to strengthen its position in the North African market, a French cereals body official said on Tuesday.

France sold 1.9 million tonnes of soft wheat and 650,000 tonnes of durum wheat last season to its former colony, one of the world's largest grain importers.

"We plan to sell two million tonnes of soft wheat and 700,000 of durum wheat to Algeria for the 2005-2006 season," Vice-President of France Export Cereal Bernard Valuis told reporters in Algiers.

Algeria's cereals output fell to 3.5 million tonnes this year from 4.0 million tonnes a year ago but the government expects imports to remain unchanged at around 5.0 million tonnes.
