"The superhighway starting from Flashman Hotel in Saddar up to Chandni Chowk would ensure smooth sailing of traffic between Rawalpindi and Islamabad", the Town Nazim said while talking to reporters.
He said that Information Minister Rasheed Ahmad was busy in negotiating with concerned quarters regarding this mega project. This would be an important project of the city to resolve the traffic problems. Besides, it would improve the economic scenario of the city, he added.
He said that Town government would also install cameras at signals to control traffic on the busiest Murree Road.
He said that in all 46 Union Council of Rawal Town 220 water filter plants would be installed to provide clean and safe drinking water. "The project has been approved at a cost of Rs 60 million and very soon work would be started on it," he added.
He said that Tehsil Muncipal Administration (TMA) has handed over 25 Kannals land to federal government for construction of 400-bed hospital at the site of old TB Hospital. The Prime Minister would visit the hospital site during current month, he said.
He said that City District Government would lay modern sewerage system in the city with the financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank. The work on this project would start in two or three months. This mega project would cost Rs 5 billion.
He said that Punjab government has granted sanction to appoint 300 more sanitary workers for keeping the city clean. "Privatisation of sanitation system in Rawalpindi is under consideration on the pattern of Karachi. For this purpose a team of high officials of TMA will visit Karachi to watch the system closely," he added.
Shafiq said that the Town Government would transfer powers to Union Nazims for sanitation and cleanliness in respective areas and UC Nazim will be responsible and answerable in case of any complaint from any corner. "From November 14, TMA will celebrate 'cleanliness week' during which sanitation would be focused all over the city," he said.
