Britain has welcomed Pakistan-India decision to open the Line of Control (LoC) allowing Kashmiris on the either side to help in relief work being carried out to provide succour to the victims of October 8 earthquake.

The two countries decided to open the LoC on five points following President Pervez Musharraf's initiative in this regard. Kashmiris could cross the LoC on these points after getting permission from the concerned authorities of the two countries.

"We warmly welcome Pakistan and India's agreement to promote humanitarian assistance," said Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman when approached by APP for his comments here on Friday.

The FCO spokesman emphasised the need that politics needed to be put aside in view of the devastating quake, which killed over 70,000 and injured over 80,000 people in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir.

The spokesman stressed the need for maximising assistance to those affected by the earthquake and said, "we will obviously continue to urge both countries to look creatively at other options for co-operation."
