Renowned geologist, Professor Dr Omar Farooq has said that Pakistan is located in a high seismic zone from where under the ground three oceanic plates, the Arabian plate, the Eurosean plate and Indian plate are passing through.

Expressing his views at a private TV channel about the recent earthquake that severally hit Pakistan and AJK leaving a trail of deaths and destruction, Farooq said the fault line on which the quake of October 8 occurred was passing through the Parliament House in Islamabad. Similarly the fault line which had caused a big earthquake some years ago in the Indian city of Ahmadabd was passing through Karachi city.

He pointed out that a devastative earthquake of 8.3 degrees at the Richter scale had hit the coastal city of Makran in 1943 when it was not very much populated, nonetheless some four thousand people had died.

Similarly an earthquake of 7.6 degrees had hit Quetta city in 1935 and had killed some sixty thousand people. "We are very much in a zone where possibilities of earthquake can never be ruled out," he pointed out.

He further informed that cities like Muzaffarabad, Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi were located in category B.
