The districts where Eidul Fitr was celebrated included provincial metropolis Peshawar, Nowshera, Mardan, Charsadda, Swabi, Karak, Hangu and areas of the tribal belt.
In the provincial capital, the local Ruet-e-Hilal Committee made the decision in presence of hundreds of people at the historic Qasim Ali Khan mosque. Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai, presided the meeting.
The MMA-led NWFP government had also sent its representatives to the mosque to observe the proceedings. However, the provincial government of the religio-political alliance remained dissociated from the decision.
The decision about the celebration of Eidul Fitr was made after the local Ruet-e-Hilal Committee interviewed nine men, who claimed to have sighted the Shawal moon in different parts of the province.
They were asked questions to establish their evidence. Most people in Peshawar city and in the villages of the outlying district generally follow the decisions of the ulema, who congregate annually for moon-sighting at the Qasim Ali Khan mosque.
The ulema of Mardan district, who met at the Masjid Sarbaz Khan, heard evidences from 16 persons, who swore to have sighted the moon.
They belonged to different places such as Shaikh Maltoon and Par Hoti in Mardan city, Garyala and Bakshali villages in Mardan district, and Turlandi in Swabi district. Ulema in Swabi, Charsadda and Malakand Agency also announced that the Shawal moon had been sighted.
In Hangu, the Ulema met at Jamia Muftai Uloom Madressa under the chairmanship of Maulana Abdullah. Other leading religious scholars, who attended the meeting, included Maulana Mohammad Rafiq and Maulana Ziaul Islam.
In Mir Ali, North Waziristan, the decision regarding celebrating Eid was made after six men claimed sighting the Shawal moon. Announcements to this effect were also made in Karak.
In Peshawar the Eid prayers were offered at a number of mosques. On this occasion special prayers were offered for the unity of the country. The faithful also offered fateha for the departed souls in the October 8 devasted earthquake.
