The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) will continue to assist Pakistan up to the rehabilitation stage in its second largest operation in the world, said President ICRC Jakob Kellenberger after meeting President General Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday.

He also committed to set up ICRC centres for artificial limbs in the quake affected areas as part of its medical assistance for thousands of people injured in October 8 deadly earthquake in NWFP and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

"We are committed to help Pakistan up to the rehabilitation stages" he said, reporting that international community has responded positively to ICRC's call for raising 100 million Swiss francs.

Kellenberger lauded the courageous and determined efforts, the Pakistani people and the government have launched to confront the challenge of massive devastation. "The President is very clear and strong in his commitment to carry out reconstruction and rehabilitation," he said.

President Musharraf thanked the ICRC chief for its efforts in the face of the natural disaster, which has claimed more than 57,000 lives and destroyed infrastructure over a large swathe of the mountainous region.

The ICRC has engaged seven of its helicopters in the large-scale relief operations in the difficult mountainous region and had also set up field hospitals, treating the injured in the affected areas.
