Nortel Networks Corp, one of the world's largest telecom equipment suppliers, reported surging sales and a smaller third-quarter loss on Wednesday, as it hiked its 2005 sales forecast.

Nortel, stung last year by an accounting scandal that dented demand, said it now expects fiscal 2005 revenue growth of 13 percent over 2004, above its previous 10 percent target.

It maintained a gross margin estimate of 40 percent to 44 percent and still sees operating expenses as a percent of revenue at about 35 percent by the end of the year.

Nortel said it had a net loss of $105 million, or 2 cents a share, in the period ended September 30, versus a loss of $259 million, or 6 cents a share, in the same period last year.
