The European Union, in response to Israeli and Palestinian requests that it be a third party presence on the Palestinian border with Egypt, said on Wednesday it would send officials to the region to see how it can help.

On Tuesday, top Israeli cabinet ministers approved a border crossing between Gaza and Egypt to allow Palestinians to come and go freely after the Israeli withdrawal from the strip. The possible role of the EU has yet to be detailed.

It would be the first time since Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967 that Palestinians would be allowed to enter and leave either territory without passing through Israeli controls.

PALESTINIAN GUNMAN KILLED: Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian militant in a gunbattle near the West Bank town of Jenin on Wednesday, hours after a soldier died in a separate incident in a nearby town, Palestinian medics said.

Israeli military sources confirmed that troops had conducted a raid in the area.
