Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has said that new cities would be constructed at the sites of completely destroyed cities of Muzaffarabad and Balakot.

In an interview to BBC Radio on Wednesday, the Minister said that reconstruction work might begin within a month.

He said the designs of model cities and villages were under study for the past eight to ten days under the supervision of General Zubair.

Various domestic and international companies are making their presentations, he said adding some individuals had also prepared their own models.

He said Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhary Pervez Elahi and some parties of Gujranwala had prepared models separately, which were being examined.

To a question, he said Rs 25,000 were being given to homeless victims of earthquake as an initial support. By using this amount they would be able to set up temporary shelter for themselves, which might protect them from cold, he said.

He said the devastation was enormous and it would of course take some time for complete rehabilitation.
