The National Assembly standing committee on railways on Monday took a serious note of misuse of railway saloon and directed railway authorities to furnish a comprehensive inquiry report within two weeks.

The meeting held in the parliament house under the chairmanship of MNA Sardar Tufail Ahmed Khan to discuss Pakistan Railways earnings and reported misuse of PR saloon.

The committee discussed the report of railways vigilance cell, Multan, in this connection and reasons for income generation in the current fiscal year.

It also discussed PR targets and achievements and progress of the Rs 9 billion projects in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

The committee was informed overall earnings of this year up to October 2005 was less compared to the last year for the same period but the target would likely to be achieved by the end of the current fiscal year.

It was also informed the PR freight unit had lost its oil transport business due to construction of pipeline from Karachi to Mehmood Kot, conversion of IPPs to gas and future plans for extension of pipeline from Machike to Tarudjabba.

The meeting was further informed though oil prices have been increased 27 percent, yet, the railways has not increased its fares, which affected the revenue of the institution. The committee was briefed about 12 projects being funded by the PSDP, both in the local and foreign currency.

Committee members thoroughly discussed the progress of these projects and recommended projects should be completed within the given time frame.

Minister of state for railways Ishaq Khan Khakwani, MNAs Muhammad Saeed Virk, Pir Muhammad Shah Khagga, Syed Gulzar Sibtain Shah, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Muhammad Anwar Bhutto, Muhammad Farooq and Azam Malik attended the meeting.
