Federal Local Bodies and Rural Development Minister Justice Abdul Razaq Thaheem (Retd) on Thursday said that every possible step is being taken by the government to provide relief to the affected people.

Speaking in a PTV programme, he said the entire nation showed response with great enthusiasm like during the 1965 war. Volunteers from every nook and corner of the country reached the affected areas, he added.

To a question, he said provincial governments responded very positively and huge number of relief goods were sent to affected areas.

District Nazims played their due role and acted fastly in relief activities, he added.

After relief activities, reconstruction phase will be started. Rehabilitation is a big challenge, which will be tried to meet as soon as possible. It may take years, he added.

The minister said nearly $5 billion is required to rebuild the infrastructure and meet the challenge.

To another question, he said maximum financial sources will have to be generated, adding: "By the grace of Allah Almighty, we will meet the challenge."

He said the government has utilised all its sources to provide relief to the affected people, and all out efforts are being made by the government in this regard.

He also said the country has limited resources that is why the appeal has been made to the international community for financial assistance.
