Currently, one can observe only a fraction of the population of car drivers wearing seat belts in the country without being impeached by law enforcers. Whereas, in most countries of the world particularly in the developed nations, drivers wear seat belts voluntarily without the stick of law enforcing agencies as they are aware of the benefits accruing from it.
On the contrary, in Pakistan, drivers shy away from wearing seat belts as they might think that they have the appropriate driving skills and are not exposed to road accidents or that they might be considered cowards and people will laugh at them if they wear seat belts.
One research report reveals that seat belts nearly reduce the probability of death in the case of fatal accidents by almost 40%, besides saving the family from trauma.
I accordingly, urge the local government to enforce the wearing of seat belts in letter and spirit as was done with helmet for motorcyclists in the interests of our citizens.
