Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) have mutually agreed to hold elections of the SCBA on October 31.

Two former judges of the Lahore High Court (LHC) Malik Muhammad Qayyum and Malik Saeed Hassan are in the run for the office of the president of the SCBA. Both the candidates have started their electioneering campaign.

While addressing a gathering of lawyers here on Thursday, Malik Qayyum said that he always worked for the dignity of legal profession and welfare of the lawyers. Like other lawyers and democratic people, he said "I believe in democracy, independence of judiciary, supremacy of constitution and rule of law". He said that leadership of the lawyers has failed to compel the government to accept the demands of the bars.

He said that present situation demands unity in the ranks of legal fraternity. He said that journalists got their colony in the city but lawyers unfortunately lost their approved quota in different development scheme.

Malik Saeed Hassan in another gathering of the lawyers said that he always worked for strengthening of judiciary. He said that he believe in democracy and always waged struggle for democracy in the country along with other democratic forces. He said that corruption is rampant in judiciary. He added that he would work for the dignity of lawyers.
