Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Thursday opposed deployment of US and Nato forces in the country. He feared the United States and Nato might have political objectives behind deployment of troops. "No country must be allowed to send its forces. The US has also sent troops along with aid."

"Presence of foreign forces has triggered acute concern and anxiety among the masses," Maulana Fazl said, while speaking at a news conference in his chamber at the Parliament House.

He said there was no need for foreign forces, as the Pakistan Army men were sufficient for the relief operations in the earthquake-stricken areas.

However, he added, foreign experts in relief and rehabilitation process might be welcomed, but no troops from the US or any other country.

Maulana Fazl criticised the state-run media's coverage of the relief activities, saying it appeared as if only the government and its functionaries were engaged in relief works.

"Whereas, the actual position is that not only people from all walks of life are involved, but also the opposition parties are equally contributing in the relief efforts," he said.

Maulana Fazl, who is also the secretary general of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), cautioned that such selective approach of the government ran contrary to its claims of promotion of national unity and solidarity.

Likewise, he said on the one hand, President General Pervez Musharraf wanted to convene an all parties' conference on relief and rehabilitation, while on the other, he wanted to ditch the opposition as well as the Parliament.

He said that the National Assembly was holding a marathon debate on the aftermath of the quake, but the government had not taken it into confidence on local and foreign aid accumulated so far and what strategy was being evolved for relief and rehabilitation of the victims.

The MMA leader termed this as bypassing the Parliament on key issues, an insult to the masses' elected representatives.

He deplored that the government had also not responded positively to a solid and logical proposal by the opposition that a parliamentary committee should monitor the relief and rehabilitation process.

When asked whether or not the MMA would take part in the possible government-convened APC, he said that they were in contact with each other and were yet to take a decision thereon.

He criticised allocation of Rs 1 billion for the quake victims in NWFP and asked the government to announce more funds.

He claimed that unlike AJK's 13,000 square kilometres affected area, the total area affected by the quake in NWFP's five districts was 17,000 square kilometres.

About relief and rehabilitation in NWFP, he said, the National Security Council (NSC) had promised to allocate Rs 32 billion: Rs 20 billion for victims' assistance and Rs 12 billion for the reconstruction of government buildings.

To a question about some reports that under the cover of relief aid al Qaeda could take advantage of the situation in Pakistan, he said that there was no truth in such reports.

"The religious people who were dubbed as terrorists are engaged in relief operations in the affected areas. The West should also think in a humanitarian way," he said.

Maulana Fazl said that it was quite possible that the West might be looking for a justification to rush troops to Pakistan for political objectives under the garb of hunting down al Qaeda elements.

The MMA leader lamented that such attempts were aimed at exploiting the human misery at this hour of grief and trial.
