The government on Wednesday informed the National Assembly Standing Committee on Education that it would reduce the number of education boards to herald a uniformed system. The committee was further informed that a madrassah was established on illegally occupied plot in the federal capital.

The meeting took place here in the Parliament House with MNA Tehmina Dasti in the chair to discuss the performance of Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE), Inter-Board Committee of Chairman and the Department of Libraries.

Sources said that Education Minister Javed Ashraf Qazi apprised the committee of steps to bring what officials believe meaningful changes in the national curricula.

Javed said the government was actively engaged in introducing uniform education policy all across the country, and added that the number of education boards would be reduced.

At present, there are numerous education boards operating in almost every district of the country. Sources said that the committee was told that a strategy was being chalked out to streamline the whole system.

The committee urged the Education Ministry to include subjects of Geography and History in Matriculation curriculum. Meanwhile, it also directed that Pakistan Studies should only be taught up to Matriculation level.

The FBISE Chairman was asked to assist other regional boards of intermediate and secondary education in strengthening their system of examination and marking of answer papers.

While discussing the performance of Inter-Board Committee Chairman, the committee members were of the opinion that the office should be located in an accessible place.

They expressed displeasure that students were facing great difficulties due to the present location of the office of Inter-Board Committee Chairman.

Director General, Department of Libraries briefed the committee about the scope of activities of the department.

He said the department was established to deal with matters related to libraries and librarianship in the country and also is a custodian of national literary heritage.

He said that the department had significantly contributed in collection and preservation of national literary heritage, providing advisory services to other institutions in planning and improving libraries, providing reading services to children and compilation of publication of Pakistan National Bibliography.

The committee expressed serious concern on the illegal occupation of the plot reserved for extension of Children's Library at Islamabad. It was told that a seminary has been established on illegally occupied plot.

The committee asked Education Ministry to take up with Capital Development Authority (CDA) the issue of vacation of the plot at the earliest.

The meeting was attended by Lieutenant General Javed Ashraf Qazi, Zeb Gohar Ayub, Mohammad Akhtar Khan Kanju, Asiya Azeem, Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Khalid Wahab, Aisha Munawar and Amanullah Khan.
