The Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has said that government was striving hard to normalise the situation in the country in the aftermath of earthquake disaster.

It was a huge calamity and the government did not have the required capability to tackle the situation, the minister told Voice of America.

He said it was not the time for anyone to resort to criticism, adding, however the government was ready to face any situation. He said the people who criticised government's efforts in post earthquake conditions should know the real causes as well.

Almost all the affected areas were in the mountainous region, some of which even could not be approached by helicopters. He said Pakistan army however took this challenge bravely and within no time they were in the field to help affectees with all available resources.

Initially it was not possible for the rescue and relief agencies to reach everywhere but with the time situation was gradually improving and the relief activities were now being undertaken in all the affected areas, he said.

He said the mobile hospitals had been set up in all the areas and doctors and paramedics were busy round the clock in providing medical assistance.

The process for the restoration of necessary infrastructure such as roads, electricity, telephone, water supply systems etc was going on in a fast pace, he said.

Defending the role of state-run electronic media said, it was working upto the expectations of nation. The PTV was rendering multiple services to inform and facilitate the affectees in many areas.

"The organisation however has to follow some ethics in national interest which the private channels some time ignore," he remarked. For example he said the PTV could not telecast a dying person in live transmission.
