Punjab Governor Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd) has urged micro finance institutions and NGOs to reach five million people who wanted to avail micro loan facility.

He was addressing the loans disbursing ceremony here on Wednesday jointly organised by Khushhali Bank, Zarai Tarqiyati Bank limited (ZTBL) and First Women Bank Limited (FWBL).

The Governor conceded poverty was still there despite government's efforts to alleviate poverty. While lauding the efforts of three banks, he asked its management to reduce existing mark up rate of 18 per cent on micro finance for the poor. He also suggested banks to give loans to small enterprises for marketing of their products, which would help them to get a right price for their products.

According to him, women were playing a vital part in the growth of national economy; however, they were not getting their due rights. There was a need to change the mindset of men towards women, which was the impediment in women getting their rights. For the betterment of women and to prevent crimes against them, the government was amending Hadood Ordinance.

While addressing the audience, ZTBL President Ghalib Nishtar was of the view that Rs 625 billion were required to meet the growing demand of micro credit. "We were bringing about changes in ZTBL under which apart from the agriculture sector, the bank would also entertain other segments of the economy for financing," he added.

Khushhali Bank President Rasheed Akthar Chugtai said that during last five years the micro credit financing institutions had sanctioned small loans to 500,000 people. Khushhali Bank, including 90,000 women, gave loans to 400,000 people. "At present six banks were operating in micro financing, while three new banks were in the pipeline, which would start its operations soon. Interestingly, the recovery rate of his bank was 95 per cent," he added.

FWBL President Zareen Aziz urged the audience to give equal opportunities to women so that they could also contribute to the national exchequer.
