The Russian government has bought 901,720 tonnes of soft milling wheat in 16 days of intervention tenders intended to prop up prices, the National Mercantile Exchange said on Tuesday.

The exchange, which is in charge of the tenders, said 2.69 billion roubles ($93.99 million) had been spent so far out of the 6.2 billion allocated for the purchases.

The government bought 43,630 tonnes of third class wheat on Tuesday in a price range of 2,890-3,290 roubles per tonne and 5,700 tonnes of fourth class wheat at 2,370-2,440 roubles.

The top price for third class wheat originating from the European part of Russia has been set at 3,100 roubles, from Siberia and the Urals at 3,300 roubles.

Lower class fourth class wheat, expected to constitute the bulk of Russia's wheat crop, has been priced at 2,450 roubles per tonne for European Russia and at 2,600 roubles for Siberia and the Urals.

The tenders are expected to be held twice a week, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, at least until December. The next session is expected to take place on Wednesday, October 26.
