North and South Korea plan to meet on the sidelines of the East Asian Games to discuss sending a joint team to next year's Asian Games and the 2008 Olympics, South Korean officials said.

North Korea's Olympic committee chief Mun Jae-Duk proposed the meeting to coincide with the East Asian Games from October 29 to November 6 in Macau, South Korea's Olympic Committee (KOC) said.

North Korea also proposed a joint march with South Korea at the opening ceremony of the East Asian Games.

The fourth East Asian Games brings together athletes from the two Koreas, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Guam and Japan.

In September, South and North Korean sports chiefs reached a provisional agreement on fielding unified teams for next year's Asian Games at talks arranged by the Olympic Council of Asia in the Chinese city of Guangzhou.

They agreed "in principle" to form unified teams for the 2006 Asiad and a joint soccer team for friendly matches with Brazil next spring.

For next year's Asian Games, South Korea hopes to field joint squads for ball games because forming a completely unified team may cause various problems.

The Koreas fielded unified teams for the World Table Tennis Championships and an international youth football competition, both in 1991. They also have marched together five times in Olympic opening and closing ceremonies.
