South Asia Free Media Association (Safma) has constituted a committee to evaluate the losses sustained by the journalists in the recent earthquake. This was announced by the Secretary General Safma, Imtiaz Alam, while addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club (LPC) here on Monday.

Imtiaz said that the committee is comprised of Zia-uddin, Nusrat Javed, Athar Khan, Hussain Naqi, Mustansar Javed and Imtiaz Alam. Besides this committee, two groups have also been formed, which would visit these areas to assess the damages suffered by the journalists.

He said that an account had been opened in the name of Free Media Fund (for rehabilitation of journalists) in which anybody could donate while it would be audited and open for checking. He said that Safma staff had started collecting funds for their brethren by donating their one-week salary.

He said that India chapter of Safma had already set up a body to work in this regard while efforts in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were also on. He maintained that media played a very important role in making the government, world and international agencies wakeful about the volume of devastation. However, he said that according to their initial estimation around 100 journalists of those areas had suffered losses.
