Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) is focusing on demand reduction of drugs and would now shift its focus on the educational institutions in the Punjab province to check the increasing number of drug addicts among students.

ANF Commander Brigadier Babar Idrees revealed this while addressing a news conference here on Monday. He said heroin smuggling from Afghanistan into Pakistan had increased substantially during last two years. However, the ANF would use all its resources to check drug trafficking in the country, he added.

Counting ANF's one-month achievements, the ANF Commander said intelligence wing had been activated which resulted in busting a factory indulged in manufacturing of 'tranquilliser injections and tablets' besides recovering a huge quantity of heroin and charas.

Moreover, the ANF, on receipt of secret information, foiled an attempt at Lahore airport through which 11.6 kilogram heroin was being smuggled to Uganda via Dubai by Emirate flight number EK 625 on October 22, 2005. The heroin was concealed tactfully in motor vehicles spare parts. The accused Waseem Sattar and Muhammad Tariq who belong to Sahiwal were also arrested.

Similarly, in another attempt, the ANF arrested Afsar Ali belonging to Peshawar who was carrying 1.4-kilogram heroin to Bangkok through Thai Airline TG-506, he added.

Giving details of raids conducted in one month, he said the ANF teams recovered 16.350-kilogram heroin, 83.96-kilogram charas, 80,000 tranquilliser injections and 40,000 tablets, 16.50-kilogram chemical powder, and 67-liter liquor. Apart from narcotics, the teams also recovered labels, empty bottles, and machine that was used for filling the injections, he added.
