The Ministry of law, Justice and Human Rights has decided to establish Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Karachi as a pilot project aimed at supporting court referred mediation.

According to a press release issued here on Monday by the Ministry, this decision was taken by the ministry after a meeting held with Federal Law, Justice and Human Rights Minister Wasi Zafar.

The matter was discussed with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) representatives, who participated in the meeting. According to the decision taken in the meeting, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed between the Law Ministry and the IFC.

A pilot ADR mediation centre will be established in Karachi to support court referred mediation under the MoU to be signed between the Ministry and IFC according the decision of the meeting.

The centre will be attached to the High Court and District and Sessions Courts, which will refer SME commercial cases for mediation to the centre and enforce the mediated agreements.

The objective of ADR project is to institutionalise mediation process and systems to increase efficiency and relieve courts from heavy backlogs.

The ADR project will also help extricate the private sector, especially SMEs from business hindering litigation and unblock assets caught up in disputes.
