The German Ministry of Economic Co-operation (BMZ) has approved the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (REEE) project for Pakistan.

Guntram Glassbrenner, an energy efficiency expert from German Development Corporation-GTZ, said this in a meeting with Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (Smeda) experts.

Anjum Ahmad, general manager, Central Support Department; Khalid Kifah, manager, Technical Innovation Department; Sajjad Moghal, manager, Policy Planning; and Imran Chaudhry, manager, Donor Co-ordination included in the Smeda team, exchanged views with German expert.

Guntram was accompanied by Martin Kruska, head, Climate Change Services of Eutech, a renowned German company, dealing in energy management.

He said the GTZ was interested in undertaking a three-year programme based upon the technical assistance with financial support for enhancing the scope of Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency (REEE) in Pakistan.

Main partners in this project are Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) and National Energy Conservation Center (Enercon) and Ministry of Environment, he said, adding the GTZ was keen to learn the real needs of SMEs for energy. He called for a close co-ordination with Smeda for this purpose.

Guntram informed that REEE project was initiated last year when German Development Co-operation experts visited Pakistan in May 2004 followed by a workshop on planning and consensus building between October 6-8, 2004, which aimed at promoting renewable energy supply and efficiency, particularly in off grid areas.
