The water level at Gudu and Sukkur barrages dropped from high to middle during last 24 hours. At Gudu barrage up-stream the water level stood at 3,45,946 cusecs at 6.00 pm on Friday. At down-stream, it was 3,11,598 cusecs.

At Sukkur barrage up-stream water level was 4,78,840 cusecs and 4,22,130 cusecs down-stream during the same period. According to Irrigation officials water level at both Gudu and Sukkur barrages was likely to fall by 1,00,000 cusecs in the next 12 hours.

They dismissed any threat of flood in the commandment area of Gudu and Sukkur barrages, and said the protective bunds of the Indus River are quite sound and intact. The stone pitching and dumping of sand bags at weak and sensitive points was continuously being done by the labourers and workers of the department round the clock, they said.

They added that army, district administration and relief agencies have already been put on alert from Gudu to Sukkur barrages for the safety of people settled in the katcha areas.

In Sukkur district, they said, over 10,000 people have been evacuated to safer places, by ferrying them on boats by the army personnel. They are being provided food and medicines at the relief camps established at Sukkur, Rohri and Panno Aqil talukas. The population in the katcha area of Sukkur district is estimated to around 30,000, and the authorities are carrying out operation to evacuate rest of the people to relief camps.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sindh, Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim paid a detailed visits to Sukkur, Ghotki and Jacobabad districts on Thursday and Friday. He was given detailed briefing by Chief Engineers of Sukkur and Gudu barrage.
