The government has constituted a committee to probe into the import of 69 faulty railway engines worth $98.2 million from China, sources told Business Recorder. Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Dr Akram Sheikh, would be the chairman of the committee while Secretary Finance and Secretary Railways would be its members. The committee would submit its findings to the Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet for final decision on scrapping the deal or otherwise.

The decision was taken by ECC in its last meeting on a summary from Ministry of Railways, in which it was suggested that contract with the Chinese government on the purchase of 69 diesel and electric locomotives should be revised.
