US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld called on President General Pervez Musharraf here on Wednesday and reiterated the United States commitment to broadening and deepening its strategic relationship with Pakistan. During the meeting, both the leaders discussed bilateral relations, defence co-operation and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest. Rumsfeld expressed appreciation for Pakistan's important role in promoting regional peace and stability and its critical co-operation in the global war on terrorism.

He reaffirmed the US decision to enhance military assistance to Pakistan and strengthen defence co-operation with Pakistan. He said the US would step up support to meet Pakistan's legitimate defence needs.

Rumsfeld praised President Musharraf for his initiatives to promote peace and stability in South Asia. He also expressed appreciation for Pakistan's support for stabilisation and reconstruction of Afghanistan.

The president appreciated the US decision to sell F-16 aircraft to Pakistan. He said this would be an important factor for preserving regional peace and security.

Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri and Defence Minister Rao Sikander Iqbal were also present at the meeting. Rumsfeld was accompanied by Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker and other senior US officials.
