Pakistan and Oman on Tuesday agreed to further develop co-operation between both the countries, particularly in the fields of joint investment, energy, maritime transport, information technology, human resource development, manpower and bilateral trade. According to a joint statement issued after the visit of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to the Sultanate of Oman, following the meetings with Omani leaders, both the sides also agreed to promote shipping linkages between Omani ports with Karachi and Gwadar.

During the visit, the prime minister met Sultan Qaboos and exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest.

They also discussed bilateral relations and stressed the importance of boosting joint co-operation.

Sultan Qaboos recalled his landmark visit to Pakistan in April 2001 and his interaction with President Musharraf and the significant decisions taken that greatly strengthened bilateral relations.

He said that Prime Minister Shaukat's visit to Oman would bring the two countries even closer.

Shaukat expressed his great admiration for the leadership of Sultan Qaboos in the development of the Sultanate.

Shaukat invited a private trade delegation to visit Pakistan. On regional co-operation, both the sides welcomed the current efforts to reach a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) and Pakistan. This will have an overall effect on the improvement of trade ties between Pakistan and the GCC countries.

The prime minister also met the private sector representatives. Shaukat extended an invitation to the Omani private sector to visit Pakistan.

Reflecting a joint desire of the governments of both the countries to conduct regular political consultations between them a memorandum of understanding on political consultation between the ministries of foreign affairs of both the countries was signed during the visit.
