The Government of Japan has decided to extend emergency assistance to the Government of Pakistan for the relief of recent rains, flood, landslides and avalanches in Balochistan and NWFP. Japan's assistance consists of 150 tents, 3000 blankets and 20 rolls of plastic sheet worth 21 million yen (US $200,000 approx.) Tuesday arrived at the Islamabad International Airport. These relief goods were formally handed over by Nobuaki Tanaka, Ambassador of Japan to Ijaz Rahim, federal Cabinet Secretary.

The people and Government of Japan heard with great sorrow about the colossal loss of valuable human lives and damage to houses and livestock in the wake of heavy rains in Balochistan along with massive snowfall in NWFP, Northern Areas as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

At present many people whose houses were destroyed are forced to face harsh weather conditions and are living under open sky in extremely difficult circumstances as evacuees, and the Japanese emergency relief is aimed to help these displaced people.

The decision to provide support to these affected people has been made especially from the humanitarian point of view and in consideration of the friendly relations between Japan and Pakistan.-PR
