German engineering conglomerate Siemens plans to cut 945 jobs in Germany at its struggling SBS information technology services unit this year, an SBS spokesman said on Monday. The figure includes 275 job cuts agreed last year but not yet implemented. The other 670 are to deal with overcapacity at the unit, which made an operating profit of just 40 million euros ($52 million) on sales of 4.7 billion last fiscal year.
SBS, which employs some 15,000 workers in Germany, said it would avoid compulsory redundancies if possible.
