Telenor, a Norwegian mobile telecom operator, is to invest one billion dollars in Pakistani telecom private sector in the coming five or so years in building mobile phone service network, the executives of the transnational firm announced here on Monday. The company that opened its state-of-the-art Pakistani headquarters here is also to build nearly a 100 or more satellite offices in the country. At present, it has offices at Karachi and Lahore, but has not started providing connections.

The indications are that it may be possible by late spring this year when a functional infrastructure is available. The opening of the glass-house modern building at the Jinnah Super Market in the Markaz of F-7, Telenor Chief Executive Tore Johnsen said the company's presence in Pakistan reflected his transnational's "confidence in the country's governance, stability of policies, and capabilities of its people."

The inauguration of the head office of Telenor also marked the birthday celebrations of the Norwegian monarch, King Harald V. The simple ceremony was presided over Federal IT Minister Owais Leghari and attended by Ambassador Janis Bjorn Kanavin.

Talking to the select gathering invited by Telenor, Owais Leghari said that opening of the telecommunication sector to private investors had been most fruitful, and hoped that the Norwegian operators will prove themselves as good here as they had in other economies.

He also expected new-comers in the sector will not get involved in "unhealthy competitions", but their developmental role and provide efficient services.

In an informal discussion with journalists, Helge Dietrichson, director of Communications in Pakistan, said that Telenor was operating in several countries abroad besides Oslo its stock was on quotation at Nasdaq, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore bourses.

He said the acquisition of a license in Pakistan was in continuation to its activities in Asia, as it was present in Bangladesh, Thailand and Malaysia.

He claimed that his firm had been ranked as 12th largest mobile operator in the world, and had owner shares in mobile operations in 12 countries starting from USA, Europe and Malaysia in the east with 52.7 million subscribers.
