The United States and Japan declared Saturday that Taiwan was a common security issue amid concerns over China's military build up and threat to invade the island if it declares independence. The two allies for the first time acknowledged that easing tensions in the Taiwan Strait was part of their "common strategic objectives", in a joint statement released after a top ministerial meeting in Washington of the US-Japan Security Consultative Committee.
