Federal Minister for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jatoi on Saturday formally launched the finalisation of the feasibility report for construction of Nai Guj Dam at Guj Inspection Bungalow, 40km from here near Tirbhat Bund at Guj waterfall Kirthar range near Dadu. Speaking on the occasion Jatoi said that completion of Nai Guj Dam at Nai Guj River would benefit an area of over 25,000 acres from the irrigation water while the entire Katcha area would be protected from the seasonal flood ravages of Guj River due to rains at Kirthar mountains.

This would also enable transmigrates to return to their places and cultivate the soil enabling provision of enough subsistence. He said that as Nai Guj Dam had become necessary for providing irrigation water and cultivating more land in the Katcha area, new dams were required throughout the country to store water for irrigation and hydro purposes.

Highlighting the commitment of President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to serve Pakistanis he said both leaders were dedicatedly working to eliminate poverty and according people with better standard of living. He quoted President Musharraf that interests of Sindh would not be allowed to suffer.

Talking of upcoming local body elections, he urged upon the people to vote for the right persons who would serve them and engage in proper implementation of development projects.

Chairman Wapda, Tariq Hameed briefed minister that feasibility of Nai Guj Dam would be completed in 18 months after which the actual implementation stage would start. The dam will cost Rs 1,510 million. The dam will be 125 feet high and 5,535 feet long. He also briefed the minister on the progress over other projects in the area undertaken by Wapda including Greater Thar Canal. The project would help in controlling floods in the area, provide water for irrigation and promote fisheries as well. Federal Secretary Water & Power Ashfaq Mahmood also spoke on the occasion.
