The NWFP Governor Lieutenant General Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah (Retd) on Thursday visited the rain and snow affected areas of Swat district and had an aerial view of the severely damaged villages and localities including Badai Sairai, Balakot and Daun where 42 people are feared dead and nearly 80 injured besides the collapse of 65 houses. The governor along with the district Nazim Asfandiar Amirzaib also flew in helicopter over the areas of Madian, Behrain, Kalam and Malam Jabba to see the ongoing efforts for the restoration of communication network as well as relief operations.

The governor was scheduled to land at Madian but due to bad weather could not succeed to establish direct contacts with the victims.

Earlier on arrival at the Swat Airport the governor was given a detailed briefing and was informed that the Frontier Highway Authority and several other organisations had provided sufficient machinery to the district government that was being used to clear the roads of the snow and land-sliding.

It was further told that 7 bulldozers were working to remove the slides and snow from the road between Mingora and Behrain. The rehabilitation of communication network would be continued despite difficulties being faced due to continuos land sliding, it was told on the occasion.

A large number of elected members as well as representatives of the relief organisations were also present on the occasion. The governor also handed over two trucks loaded with the relief goods, sent by the NWFP branch of the Red Crescent Society to the District Nazim Swat.

Talking on the occasion the governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah said, there is no dearth of resources and relief goods; what needed is that these relief items are delivered to the affected people.

The facility of helicopter is available therefore, he added the relief operations could be carried on from any nearby safer and accessible place to help the victims in the land-locked areas. He urged the district government to assess the actual requirements so as more relief goods are also provided.

He said that the bad weather was the main impediment in the continuation of relief operations. However he desired that efforts should be made to help the people to the maximum extent on emergent basis.

Regarding the availability of relief goods the governor said that besides the assistance of the federal and provincial government the Red Crescent Society was also engaged in providing relief to the affected people.

He said that the society had already delivered two consignments of the relief goods to the people of affected areas and if needed more would also be made available.

Earlier the District Nazim Asfandyar Amirzaib and Gul zada Khan, Mohammad Iqbal, Attaullah and Sher Bahadur, Nazimeen of Union Councils Kalam, Darlai, Balakot and Uthrot, and officials of the district administration while updating the governor about the damages said that the local administrations were utilising all the available resources to ensure reach out to the affected people.

They admitted that the relief operations were being hindered in some of the affected areas due to continue rain and snowfall and the relief items despite its availability at the Saidu Sharif Air Port could not be delivered to the victims of far flung areas due to lack of approach.

However they said that all those places, where contact through land or air is available have been covered and the people are being provided relief goods and edible items.
