Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan has said the programme of social development and self-achievement were useful for our young generation that, he said, were the custodian of our future. Speaking as chief guest at the award presentation ceremony at Rangoonwala Community Centre here, the Governor noted that through those programmes, the young people of 14 to 25 years of age learn about their social responsibilities by doing service for individuals.

The ceremony was organised by the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Programme, Pakistan.

"All this makes the programme of great value and a combination of balanced activities," he said and hoped all award recipients would directly contribute towards nation building.

Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad said those programme would improve the personality of young people and also give visible impact on society.

He admired the vision of his Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, the first international Chairman and founder of the Award Programme that he started in 1956 for the young people of the world which was then working in 113 countries.

The fundamental principles of the programme like improvement of individuals through ability, perseverance, voluntary participation, freedom of choice and non-discrimination makes the Programme equally attractive, useful and acceptable for all nations involved.

The Governor noted the award Programme was satisfactorily progressing in the country.

"There is a great force of volunteers ready to serve the motherland in case of any disaster," the Governor said.

He acknowledged that Pakistan was the founder of the award Programme in Afghanistan last year and earned lot of respect and appreciation in the Award, adding, Pakistan was playing lead role in the Asia-Pacific Region, International Council as being elected member.

Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad said Pakistan Award Participants, Award Leaders and Officials had been playing an active role during various meetings, conferences and leadership workshops held in the Asia-Pacific Region and it was the largest platform of nations after the United Nations.

The National Award Authority of Pakistan presents its progress report in the meetings of the Asia Pacific Region, International Council and International Award Forum where 113 countries are gathered, he added.

In fact, the Governor said, that report reflects the amount of enthusiasm put in by the Award Participants and Award supports, which helped, build image of our country internationally.

He lauded Karachi Zone for maintaining highest level of achievement including 494 Bronze, 169 Silver and 46 Gold awards making a total of 709 awardees during a year.

Concluding his remarks, he urged the Pakistan Award Authority to keep working hard for the development of our young people.

Earlier, Tari Rangoonwala Chairman Board of Trustees Duke of Edinburgh's Award Programme Pakistan, Ataur Rehman National Director of the Programme and Hamesh Daniel Trustee and British deputy High Commissioner at Karachi also addressed the ceremony.
