Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday said that the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) bears the pivotal role in finding solution to problems being faced by the Muslim Ummah. Addressing a joint press conference with OIC Secretary General Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the Prime Minister said, Pakistan was confident that the Pan-Islamic body would "help tackle all challenges of the present age."

He underlined OIC role in promoting the concept of enlightened moderation. "Islam is the religion of peace, brotherhood, tolerance and moderation. The OIC should examine and promote the idea of enlightened moderation presented by President Pervez Musharraf for the betterment of Muslims, to dispel wrong apprehensions about Islam," he said.

The Prime Minister said that there was a dire need to project Islam's real values of peace, love and mutual understanding. Pakistan, he said, looks up to the OIC as a very important Islamic organisation, which always espoused national and global Islamic issues.

The OIC Secretary General said he had very fruitful discussions with the Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz. "We have initiated reformation at the OIC Secretariat to make it more efficient so that it becomes proactive and true representative of the Muslim countries," he said.

Ihsanoglu said it was high time to promote the image of Muslim countries in the light of the teachings of Islam. "Islam is a religion of peace and teaches the lesson of peaceful coexistence, love and affection."

The Secretary General said Pakistan had been playing an important role for the betterment of the Muslim world and "we fully support Pakistan's efforts for making the OIC an effective organisation."
