The NWFP government will spend Rs 310 million on the distribution of free textbooks among the students in all 24 districts of the province. The government frees books to boys up to primary and girls up to secondary level. The total number of the public sector primary school students is 2.8 million. Similarly, the number of girl students from class VI to X is 2,55,335.

This year the provincial government is publishing 10 per cent more books than previous year as the enrolment has registered an increase by 29 per cent.

In this connection, a function was held in Hayatabad to hand over books to the Executive District Officers (EDOs) Education of various districts. NWFP Minister for Education Maulana Fazal Ali Haqqani was the chief guest on the occasion.

Those who attended the distribution function were including NWFP Secretary for Information Technology Shahid Afridi, Chairman Text Book Board Major Attaullah Khan (Retd), Director Schools & Literacy Fazal Manan and EDO Peshawar Haleem Sherazi.

Addressing the function, Fazal Ali Haqqani said the provincial government was reforming the education system of the province. He said the provincial government was giving full attention to the promotion of education and for that purpose had initiated a lot of measures for improvement of the educational institutions.

The provincial minister further said the introduction of reforms in the education system was a challenge as their education system, which was based on the ideology of Pakistan, was under threat from various quarters. However, he made it clear till the presence of Ulema in the corridors of power no one would be allowed to change their education system or curriculum.

He said MMA, during its two years in provincial government, had recruited 2300 SET teachers and had recruited thousands of primary teachers on emergency basis. Similarly, he said hundreds of Subject Specialists and lecturers had also been recruited to save the future of the children.

The minister for education said the people had responded positively to the distribution of free books among the primary level students last year resulting in the 29 per cent increase in the enrolment.
