The Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) Secretary General Professor Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has underlined the need to make OIC proactive and efficient so that it could play significant role in enlighten moderation of the image of Muslim Ummah. Talking to APP here on Tuesday, the OIC Secretary General, who has been elected to this post in the conference of Foreign Ministers of member countries last June, said the formation of OIC was to bring the Muslim countries at one plate form, but then it had to take new role in the changing global environment.

Consul General of Turkey M Hayati Soysal was also present on the occasion.

Professor Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, first time in the history of OIC, was elected to this slot and has a rich experience of OIC serving the organisation as Director General Islamic Institute of Research, Culture and Arts of OIC in Turkey for the last 25 years. He has authored several books and won several awards for his valuable writings.

He is visiting heads of some of the key member countries after assuming his office on First January and he selected Pakistan as his first destination in this regard.

He said President Pervaiz Musharraf has said in the last OIC summit in Putrajaya Malaysia the Muslim Ummah had to bring in enlighten moderation to narrow the widening gap between the distorted image by the Islamic extremists and true representative reflection of the Ummah.

"I hope this is supplementary to what I have the vision of the Ummah and OIC", he said.

Responding to a question, he said it was high time for change in the structure, working and outlook of the OIC as an institution.

"We have initiated the reformation at the OIC Secretariat by making it more efficient so that it could support OIC to become proactive, dynamic and true representative of the Ummah", he said adding a committee of eminent persons from the member countries had been formed in that regard.

The committee is expected to finalise its recommendations by the next Ministerial meeting in June in Sana Yemen.

He said the elections to the office of Secretary-General had been held first time in the history of OIC and it signified the change in the attitudes, thinking pattern and acceptability of the democratic values by the Muslim countries.

It was high time to change the image of the Muslim Countries and Muslim Ummah, he said adding the element of extremism always remained there and would continue to surface all the times to come.

He was of the view that earlier such elements were surfaced in the name of religious or sectarian movements but were always political struggles.

As the Muslim world would continue its journey towards democratisation of the society and show tolerance towards others, that threat would diminish gradually.

The call of President Pervaiz Musharraf for enlighten moderation was very important and was essence of religion and social values, he said.

Except for the last couple of decades, the Muslim Leaders always remained moderate and showed high tolerance towards others and advocated peaceful co-existence.

Dr Ihsanoglu said the outlook of OIC had to be changed and his election to the office coupled with the strategic geographical and geo-political position of Turkey would go a long way in bridging the gap between Europe and Islamic countries.

When asked why OIC failed to translate the strong political relations among the Islamic countries into economic and business ties, he said there always remained a strong feeling about that lacking but the mechanism that could accomplish that task was absent.

He said the resolutions passed in the OIC summit and ministerial meetings were not debated upon and there was no system to implement the same. Then, the Committee of eminent persons from OIC countries had taken up the task and system was being developed.

Under new system, the resolutions would be debated upon before being carried by the house and a system was being developed to implement the same at OIC secretariat.

He also indicated that working of the OIC secretariat would be improved by inducting professional people, preparing budget for the body and bringing in key changes.

The OIC Secretary General, talking about Tsunami disaster said the OIC as an institution and the member countries extended every possible help to the victims and donated generously for the rehabilitation of the affected people in the member and non member states.

A task force for the orphan children had already been constituted, which was generating funds for the cause. He, as Co-ordinator of the Task Force, was visiting Maldives and Indonesia as his next destinations.

The OIC was organising a world-wide tele-marathon to generate funds for the children affected by Tsunami. Counting donations from various Muslim countries, he said the OIC' s sister concern had announced dollars 500 million while the poor country like Mozambique donated dollars 100,000 for the Tsunami victims. He said besides the governments in Islamic countries, Non Government Organisations, charity bodies and several trade and social organisations raised huge funds in those countries and extended the same to the affected people.
